Comma Butterfly - New stamps & Photos

Nymphalis c-album

The Comma (Polygonia c-album) is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. It has irregular wing edges, which is why it is commonly called anglewings.

It is found in northern Africa and across Europe from Portugal through Asia as far as Japan.
Its dorsal wings are colourful but its underside has a pattern  that camouflages it when its wings are held close together.

I was playing with my daughter close to the Kennet river stream near my home , and this winged beauty caught my eye and fluttered very close to my daughter - as she shouted out butterfly biting me !! run - freaked out by this winged stranger.

This little butterfly rested on a branch which had fallen of a tree recently and soon camouflaged , and was tough to find.

So after this encounter there was another of its kind close to view and I was finally able to have a good look at this butterfly.

I came back home and then correctly identified this  -

little butterfly - and  was surprised that just 2 days back RoyalMail had released a set of butterfly stamps and this beauty I spotted is the first in the set !

Its named after the very White colored comma , which it has it below its wings ; strange but true ....see for yourself.
