African Elephant - Stamps and Photos.
One of the best beast to walk the planet - and when I set my eyes upon this beauty it was a wonderful experience to see a African Elephant in a Safari @ the West Midlands for the very first time.
I am not sure if these elephant can be trained - seen most trained ones to be their cousins the Asian elephant - recently seen the movie "Water for Elephants" - based on the zoo life of a young man and an Elephant , was quiet a good one and a must see movie.
Some stamps :
A good collectible WWF Stamps set from Uganda -
This species is on a decline , due to several reasons :
- Ivory Demand.
- Desertification.
- Land Conflicts .
The one I see as a major issue is - land conflicts - where in sharing areas with humans makes their habitat unsuitable and poses a new challenge .
The conservation of this beautiful animal is the need of the hour ; the decline in supporting habitats makes it a threatened species and more challenging .
The best stamps and the earliest I have are from Belgian Congo :

Lemurs - Stamps and Photos.
Lemurs are a clade of strepsirrhine primates endemic to the island of Madagascar. The word "lemur" derives from the word lemures (ghosts or spirits) from Roman mythology and was first used to describe a slender loris due to its nocturnal habits and slow pace, but was later applied to the primates on Madagascar.
I got a close glimpse of the lovely species at the West Midlands Safari - and it was one of my best at the park that day.On entering an enclosure for the Lemurs , I was greeted by a group of lemurs interested for food I guess - as they looked close to any bag we carried (reminded me of monkeys ) - try to smell some food .
They looked just so graceful walking / climbing the tall trees within the enclosure ; the best sight to see was a mother lemur carrying her young ones on her back and ferrying them along with ease around the perimeter .
This species derive their name from Roman mythology - and looking at them and their eyes - they seemed different and mysterious - !!
Some stamps of Lemurs - Airmails for 1954 / 1960 / 1961 .
see closely for yourself -
